FIELD: organic chemistry, chemical technology. ^ SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for preparing aromatic compounds. Method involves alkylation of aromatic compound with isopropanol taken separately or in mixture with propylene in the presence of the zeolite-base catalytic composition under conditions of mixed gaseous-liquid phase or under completely liquid-phase conditions. Pressure and temperature values are maintained to provide the concentration of water in liquid reaction phase 8 000 ppm, not above, being independently of the total water content presenting in the reaction phase. In the preferable case benzene is an aromatic compound to be alkylated. In the other preferable case above described method for preparing benzene is used as a stage for preparing phenol.
