Apparatus has processing unit, first modulated light signal source oriented to number ring, first reflected light signal receiver oriented to number ring and connected to processing unit, second modulated light signal source oriented to separator cell ring, second reflected light signal receiver oriented to separator cell ring and connected to processing unit, whose output serves as output of apparatus. Method allows only one light source to be used. Construction of apparatus allows sensor adjustment requirements to reduced.
