SUBSTANCE: described is method of preparing halogenmethylbenzoyl cyanides (I) PH-CO-CN, wherein PH is chloromethyl or bromomethyl substituted phenyl radical which carries another 1-4 other radicals by reacting halogenmethylbenzoyl chlorides (II) PH-CO-Cl with liberating cyanide compound in the presence of Lewis acid optionally in inert organic solvent or diluent, whereupon product prepared by said method is isolated.
