Zusammenfassung:Tri:methylol-propane-tri: methacrylate is prepd. from tri-methylol-propane used in a 35% molar excess, compared to the concn. of methacrylic acid, the other component, 0.6-6% sulphuric acid, (based on methacrylic acid) is a direct catalyst, and 0.2-0.4% phenothiazine polymerisation inhibitor (% based on the synthetic mixt.). 80-100% toluene is used in sufficient vol. to remove water as an azeotrope from the reaction mixt. All acidity is neutralised with 5% aq. sodium-hydrogen-carbonate or 10% sodium-carbonate soln. 10% soln. of sodium-chloride is used for washing the prod. in two stages. Prod. is vacuum-distilled at 200-300 mm. Hg. pressure.
