Zusammenfassung:	Disclosed is a filter for purification of water having a filter medium; and a metal or an alloy thereof which has oligodynamic effect wherein said metal or an alloy thereof is in the form of fibres. A preferred metal is selected from silver, copper, zinc, gold or aluminium. It is preferred that aspect ratio of the fibres is range of 3 to 200. The disclosed filter on an average provides at least 5 log10 removal each of bacteria and virus from water.
