Flow generator message system

A flow generator (110) for use with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) system or a non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) system configured to supply breathable gas to a patient at a pressure elevated above atmospheric pressure, the flow generator comprising: a motor configured to generate the supply of breathable gas to a patient; at least one operation sensor (134) to generate signals; and a processor (118) coupled to the at least one operation sensor. The processor is configured to determine at least one identifying feature of a peripheral component that is coupled to the flow generator; discern the specific peripheral component based on the determined at least one identifying feature; and generate at least one message that relates to at least one of flow generator operation, flow generator service, flow generator use, patient health, peripheral devices and services, and patient treatment based on the discerned specific peripheral component.
