Taximeter, system and method for a taxi

Disclosed is a device (300) for use in a taxi. The device (300) includes a positioning unit coupled to a processing system including a memory having stored therein a plurality of computer applications and toll data indicative of associated entry and exit areas for tolled areas. The processing system executes a meter application during a passenger trip to determine a fare due which modifies the fare due to include a toll amount in response to the processing system automatically detecting, using time-stamped coordinates obtained by the positioning unit, that the taxi has passed through associated entry and exit areas of one of the tolled areas. The system also executes a payment application (470) to facilitate electronic payment of the fare due.
