Zusammenfassung:Method and an apparatus for detecting if oestrus is imminent or present in a milking animal are disclosed. The apparatus includes a sensor and processor. A processing area which encompasses at least a temperature output which includes a portion of the area between the 5th and 6th lumbar vertebrae of the milking animal is defined by the processor. An indicator of temperature output from that processing area is measured by the sensor and the processor using the measurement obtained from the sensor of the indicator of temperature output determines if an oestrus condition is imminent or present.
