Zusammenfassung:A process for the preparation of a compound of formula (1), wherein R1 represents hydrogen or lower alkyl and X represents hydrogen or halogen. The process starts with p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, with the steps described herein. Also disclosed are: (a) compounds of formula (11') wherein R1 is an acetyl group, (b) compounds of formula (12) wherein R1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl and R2 is lower alkyl, and (c) compounds of formula (14) wherein R1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl, R2 is lower alkyl and X is halogen.
