A compound of formula I is claimed wherein: A is -(CHR8)0-1-, -S-, -SO-, -SO2-, -O- or -NR8-; B is -S-, -SO2-, -O-, -N=, -CH= or -CR6R7- provided that when A is -S-, -SO-, -SO2-, -O- or -NR8- then B is -CR6R7-; D is -(CHR9)0-1- or -CH= with a double bond to B when B is -N= or -CH=; E is -CH2- or -CH-C(Z)R1- provided that only one of D and E is substituted with -CH-C(Z)R1-; Z is -O-; X is -O-, -NR5- or -CHR5-; Y is -O-, -S-, -SO-, -SO2-, -NR5- or -CHR8 provided that when X is -NR5- then Y is -CHR8- or -O- and when X is -O- then Y is -CHR8-; R1 is a group of formula VIa to VId; R2 is H or an optionally substituted alkyl; R3 is H, -NR6R7 or alkyl; R4 is H, -NR6R7, optionally alkyl substituted aryl or cycloalkyl or optionally substituted alkyl optionally interrupted by a heteroatom or -CO- or R4 is an optionally saturated 5 or 6 membered cyclic hydrophobic group optionally linked via spacer which is an alkyl chain optionally interrupted with one or more heteroatoms and /or is carbonyl or sulphonyl and the remaining variables are as defined in the specification. A pharmaceutical composition containing a compound of formula useful in the treatment or prophylaxis of thrombotic disorders such as venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, arterial thrombosis, myocardial infarction or cerebral infarction is claimed.
