Benzoxazine dione derivatives of formula (I) and their corresponding esters (containing an R3 group bound to the CO2H moiety) are new: R1 = H, CO-alkyl or CO2-alkyl; R2 = H, alkyl or halo; R3 = -ZCHR4COR5, CHR4COR5, various (hetero)cyclic group (containing R9-R15) (i)-(iii), -N=C(R16)COR9 or an antibiotic residue bound via an OH or NH group: Z = an aminocarbonyl phenyl (substituted on the ring by R6 and OR7) (iv); R4 = H, alkyl or phenyl (optionally substituted by e.g. OH or acyloxy), CH2COX or (CH2)n-Y; X = OA; A = H, alkyl, an alkali metal ion, ammonium (optionally substituted) or an antibiotic residue bound via an OH or NH group; n = 1-10; Y = a benzoxazine dione group of formula (v); R5 = OA, an antibiotic residue bound via an OH or NH group, NH-CHR8COR9 or -NHCH(COX)(CH2)nY; R8 = H, alkyl or phenyl (optionally substituted); R9 = OA or an antibiotic residue bound via an OH or NH group; R6 = H, alkyl or halo; R7 = H or acyl; m = 1 or 2; R10, R11, R16 = H, alkyl or phenyl (optionally substituted); R12 = H, alkyl, halo, OH, alkoxy, Y or -(CHR10)nCONR11-phenyl (substituted on the ring by R12 and COR9); R13 = H, alkyl, halo, OH, alkoxy or Y; R14, R15 = R1, R2.
