An acoustic source system for permanent monitoring of a reservoir comprises at least one acoustic source (130) configured for long-term deployment on a solid surface (10) at the reservoir. The system also comprises a combined power source supplying electrical power to the acoustic source (130) and a sensor array (100) monitoring the reservoir, and a combined communication system for the acoustic source (130) and the sensor array (100). The acoustic source (130) is individually addressable through the combined communication system. Time is of little concern, so that the acoustic source (130) can be charged through the infrastructure (102, 105). The existing communication system is extended with the addresses of the acoustic sources, and can be used to control the acoustic source, including triggering a shot. Offshore and-land-based applications are described.
