1463783 Diene-maleic anhydride alternating copolymers NESTE OY 31 Jan 1975 [1 Feb 1974] 4230/75 Heading C3P Alternating diene/maleic anhydride copolymers are prepared by copolymerizing a dienecontaining hydrocarbon mixture and maleic anhydride in a solvent at elevated temperature in the presence of a free radical catalyst, and precipitating the copolymer from the solution after termination of the polymerization, the diene-containing mixture comprising alkanes, alkenes, aromatics and alkadienes and being prepared by pyrolysis of hydrocarbons and the polymerization being carried out so that the alkane and inert alkene fractions having boiling points lower than the desired polymerization temperature are continuously allowed to distil off from the reaction mixture in order to limit the temperature. In examples copolymerization is effected in the presence of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and cobalt naphthenate and the product recovered by pouring the solution into toluene.
