Rods and other sections of polyamide, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyformaldehyde, and polymers of trioxane are formed by passing the molten thermoplastic material through a cooled die or mould 5, drawing off the shaped section, and stirring the material in the molten cone 4 formed in the interior of the solidified section. The stirring may be effected by a helical stirrer 2 extending from the end of the screw 1 of an extruder supplying the molten thermoplastic material. Alternatively the molten thermoplastic material is supplied by a pump, or is fed by gravity to pass vertically downwards through the die or mould.
