A hard surface cleaning composition comprises a mixture of an alpha olefin sulphonate in which at least 75% of the carbon chains have 12 carbon atoms and a second alpha olefin sulphonate in which at least 75% of the carbon chains have 20 carbon atoms, and wherein the sulphonates are present in proportions of 1: 3 to 3: 1 by weight. The sulphonates are in the form of salts with the alkali metals (e.g. sodium), ammonia and aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic amines. Other ingredients are selected from (a) anionic detergents, (b) non-ionic detergents, (c) lather boosters, e.g. coconut monoethanolamide, (d) sequestering agents, e.g. amino-, hydroxyamino-, hydroxy-carboxylic acids or salts thereof, (e) inorganic compounds e.g. phosphates such as sodium tripolyphosphate, trisodium phosphate and chlorinated trisodium phosphate; carbonates such as sodium sesquicarbonate, sulphates, chlorides and sodium metasilicate, (f) dyes, perfumes, germicides, bacteriostats, opacifiers, viscosity modifiers and a hydrotrope, e.g. sodium xylene sulphonate, (g) ethyl alcohol.
