A zinc-halogen secondary cell has an aqueous electrolyte and a cathode comprising a conductor partly contacting the electrolyte and partly contacting a mixture of an alkylammonium perchlorate and an inert conductive powder. The preferred salts are NMe 4 ClO 4 and NBu 4 ClO 4 . As shown in Fig. 5 a plurality of rod cathodes 20 are in contact with electrolyte flowing through the cell and with a mixture 14 of NMe 4 ClO 4 and a conductive powder, e.g. graphite, supported in insulating cradles 17. The cathode rods 20 are connected in parallel by side walls of conductive material with an insulating coating on their inside surfaces whilst zinc anodes 3 are also connected in parallel. A number of cells can be connected in series with electrolyte being circulated from a storage tank (Figs. 7, 8, not shown). In other embodiments the cathode mixture is supported in grooves in the surface of the cathode conductor.
