Zusammenfassung: | The present invention provides a photo-anode (100) for use in a photo-electrochemical cell (150) capable of absorbing a large proportion of a solar spectrum irradiating a given physical area, comprising an indirect band-gap semiconductor (102) characterized in that the photo-anode (100) comprises a thin-film coating of indirect band-gap semiconductor (102) deposited on a layer of a photo-catalyst (104) disposed on a conducting substrate (106), the indirect band gap semiconductor (102) and the photo-catalyst (104) forming a hetero-junction having energy band alignment of valence and conduction bands of said indirect band-gap semiconductor (102) and said photo-catalyst (104) that facilitate the generation of the photo-current. In another aspect, the present invention provides a tandem photo-electrochemical cell (150) comprising a dual photo-electrode system for the simultaneous evolution of Oxygen (O2) and Hydrogen (H2).
