A DROP TYPE FIXED BED REACTOR AND A METHOD FOR IN SITU UPGRADING OF BIO-OIL FROM BIOMASS

Present invention discloses a drop type fixed bed reactor for in situ upgrading of bio-oil from biomass. The reactor comprises a drop tube with biomass holder (6) for holding biomass or a mixture of biomass and catalyst to be pyrolyzed through in situ upgrading. The drop tube with biomass holder (6) is connected to a nitrogen line (10) and aspirator (11) to provide an inert atmosphere to the biomass to be pyrolyzed under controlled temperature and pressure conditions. The pyrolysis vapors are directed to the ice trap (14) to condense the pyrolysis vapours. In the reactor, pyrolyzing and catalytically reacting steps are carried out in a single vessel and upgrading of bio-oil is achieved in one step in a very simple and easy manner.
