In the case of a machine part (4) belonging to a pair of mechanical members in sliding contact with each other and, at least in the area of the side facing the mating machine part, being of a wear resistant structure (6) comprising comparatively hard particles embedded in a metallic matrix (8) and having a rough and uneven surface, a reduction of the manufacturing effort and expenditure and a good run-in behavior can be achieved by coating the wear resistant structure (6) with a run-in coating (7) designed to level off the unevenness and roughness of such wear resistant structure (6), which coating consists of a material suitable for wearing off during a run-in process, is different from the material of the wear resistant structure (6) underneath and is metallurgically bonded thereto and is softer than the said wear resistant structure (6) and at most of the same degree of wear resistance as the sliding surface of the opposite machine part.
