Zusammenfassung:The invention provides a process for removing and immobilising arsenic from an arsenic-containing waste. It comprises oxidising the arsenic to pentavalent arsenic in an aqueous medium, contacting the pentavalent arsenic with trivalent iron to form an insoluble iron-arsenic compound and separating precipitated iron-arsenic compound from the aqueous medium. The oxidation of arsenic is effected using oxidising bacteria at a pH between 0.5 and 4 and at a temperature between 20 and 90 °C in the presence of a mineral catalyst such as pyrite. La invencion provee un procedimiento para eliminar e inmovilizar arsenico proveniente de material residual que contiene arsenico. Este comprende oxidar el arsenico hasta arsenico pentavalente en medio acuoso, poner en contacto el arsenico pentavalente con hierro trivalente para formar un compuesto de hierro-arsenico insoluble y separar el compuesto de hierro-arsenico precipitado del medio acuoso. La oxidacion de arsenico se efectua utilizando bacterias a un pH entre 0.5 y 4 y a una temperatura entre 20 y 90°C en presencia de un catalizador mineral tal como pirita.
