La presente invención se refiere al fitomejoramiento y métodos para identificar y seleccionar plantas con resistencia a la roya del maíz del sur. Se proporcionan métodos para identificar genes novedosos que codifican proteínas que proporcionan resistencia a las plantas a la roya del maíz del sur y usos de los mismos.
