Zusammenfassung:	A rigid sail comprising at least two sail portions which are fitted in front of a mast(1) rotate around and parallel with the vertical axis is controlled to respond to wind velocity and direction. The wind velocity and direction signals from a meter are smoothed by a calculating device at prescribed intervals of time. The opening and closing of at least two sail portion are determined by the device on the basis of smoothed wind velocity and direction signals. An optimum sail angle reative to the horizontal reference line of the ship is determined by the device.
