PROCESS FOR PREPARING STABLE INORGANIC PIGMENT

Inorg. pigments stable to chems., H2S, light, weathering, heat, and storage are prepd. by treating the pigments with aq. dispersions of alkali silicates contg. compds. reacting with them to form SiO2 sols, and/or acid gases, at pH 8-11 and 60 C. Thus, 500 g aq. Na silicate (4.83% SiO2) and 471 g 2.7...

Zusammenfassung:Inorg. pigments stable to chems., H2S, light, weathering, heat, and storage are prepd. by treating the pigments with aq. dispersions of alkali silicates contg. compds. reacting with them to form SiO2 sols, and/or acid gases, at pH 8-11 and 60 C. Thus, 500 g aq. Na silicate (4.83% SiO2) and 471 g 2.74% HCO2H are added at 3.4 and 2.6 g/min, resp., to a slurry of 100 g chrome yellow and 840 g H2O stirred at 85-90 C and pH 9-10. When the pH reaches 6.5-7, the slurry is washed by decantation and dried at 110 Cto give 120 g pigment with a fine, dense coating of amorphous SiO2 with excellent ratings in tests for resistance to acids, alkalies, and H2S.
