Zusammenfassung: | The present invention is to provide a method for efficiently manufacturing plant-derived glycolic acid from sorghum useful as a C4 plant, and a method for manufacturing polyglycolic acid, a biodegradable plastic, from said plant-derived glycolic acid. The method for manufacturing glycolic acid comprises: a first process for saccharifying sorghum juice with an enzyme to obtain a sugar solution; a second process for fermenting the sugar solution with alcohol to obtain a fermentation solution comprising ethanol; a third process for fermenting the fermentation solution with acetic acid to obtain acetic acid; and a fourth process for introducing a hydroxy group to the α-carbon of the acetic acid to obtain glycolic acid.
