The present invention relates to a laundry treatment apparatus capable of supplying steam to the inside of a drum accommodating clothes, and supplying hot water or steam to the outside of the drum to also sterilize an area outside the drum, and a method for controlling the same. The laundry treatment apparatus of the present invention includes a cabinet, a drum, a duct, a fan, a heat exchange unit, and a steam unit for heating supplied water and supplying steam to the inside of the drum, and further includes a sterilizing unit that is branched from the steam unit to the outside of the drum to supply water or steam heated by the steam unit to the outside of the drum. 본 발명은 의류를 수용하는 드럼 내부에는 스팀을 공급하고, 상기 드럼 외부에도 온수 또는 스팀을 공급하도록 구비되어 드럼 외부 영역도 살균할 수 있는 의류처리장치 및 그 제어방법에 관한 것이다.
