Apparatus and Method for Recognizing Signs in Road

The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for recognizing signals in a road. More particularly, the present invention relates to an apparatus for transferring information described in the signs, to a driver and a vehicle, by recognizing the signs that provides required information for drivers among multiple speed limit signs in a road; and a method thereof. The present invention includes: a sign information collecting unit to generate a sign list in the road through recognition of an image obtained from a camera mounted in a forward direction of the vehicle; a running information acquiring unit to acquire running information of the vehicle; a first filter which compares signs included in the sign list with relative speed of the vehicle to determine whether a traffic sign on the road is fixed; a second filter to determine whether the traffic sign determined to be fixed in the road by the first filter exists in the forward direction of the vehicle; and a traffic information extracting unit which recognizes a traffic sign closest to the vehicle among traffic signs determined to exist in the forward direction after determining the traffic sign by the second filter to extract speed information described in the traffic sign closest to the vehicle.
