A method for providing commercial area information in a portable navigation device comprises the follow steps. Commercial area information is inputted to the navigation device(512). The inputted commercial area information is stored in a memory(515). A navigation mode is executed if a setting key for converting the navigation mode which is the initial mode into a commercial area mode is not inputted. The commercial area mode is executed if the setting key for converting the navigation mode into a commercial area mode is inputted.
