Zusammenfassung:	An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and a driving method thereof are provided to drive a lamp selectively according to peripheral luminous intensity of an LC panel, thereby reducing unnecessary power consumption. An LC panel(100) displays an image signal. An inverter(500) includes an optical sensor and an inverter controller. The optical sensor senses peripheral luminous intensity of the LC panel. The inverter controller compares the peripheral luminous intensity sensed by the optical sensor with preset reference luminance data, and generates a lamp driving signal for selectively driving a lamp(600) according to the comparison result. Plural lamps are selectively driven according to the lamp driving signal.
