Zusammenfassung:	An electronic key system and a method thereof are provided to prevent things inside a vehicle from being robbed by limiting lock release when a status of a portable device is limited. An electronic key system includes a vehicle device(1) and a portable device(2). The vehicle device is mounted on a vehicle and includes a search signal transmitting device(11) which transmits a search signal to detect a location of the portable device. The portable device includes a search signal receiving device(21) and notifying devices(27,28). The search signal receiving device receives the search signal transmitted from the vehicle device. The notifying devices notify the receiving of the search signal by the search signal receiving device.
