Zusammenfassung:A method for forming a functional film and a method for manufacturing an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device are provided to improves the wet spreading performance of droplets of a functional film forming composition on the surface of a substrate by using the substrate having surface roughness more than 2.3nm, so that the functional film having uniform thickness and a flat surface can be easily formed without a streak even when the functional film forming composition having poor wet spreading performance on the surface of the substrate is used. A liquid crystal display(50) has a lower substrate(52a), which is shaped as a flat rectangular plate, and an upper substrate(52b). A liquid crystal layer(56) is formed in the space between the lower substrate and the upper substrate, which is encompassed by the seal member. A plurality of segment electrodes(58) and a liquid crystal alignment film(60) are provided, in this order from the side corresponding to the lower substrate, between the lower substrate and the liquid crystal layer.A color filter(62), an overcoat film(66), a common electrode(68), and a liquid crystal alignment film(70) are provided, in this order from the side corresponding to the upper substrate, between the upper substrate and the liquid crystal layer. The color filter is formed by pigment layers(62r,62g,62b) of red(R), green(G), and blue(B), respectively. A black matrix(64) is arranged between each adjacent pair of the pigment layers, which form the color filter. The overcoat film evens the steps between the pigment layers and protects the surfaces of the pigment layers. The overcoat film is formed of acrylic resin, polyimide resin, or by an inorganic film. The common electrode is formed by a transparent conductive film such as an ITO film. The common electrode is formed in a striped manner extending in a direction perpendicular to the segment electrodes, which are provided on the lower substrate.
