METHOD FOR THE ELECTROLYSIS OF AN AQUEOUS SOLUTION OF HYDROGEN CHLORIDE OR CHLORALKALI

The invention relates to a method for the electrolysis of an aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride or chloralkali in an electrolytic cell (1) consisting at least of the following elements: an anode half-cell and an anode, a cathode half-cell and a gas-diffusion electrode as the cathode and a cation-exchange membrane for separating the anode half-cell and the cathode half-cell. According to said method, a gas containing oxygen is fed to the cathode half-cell and excess gas containing oxygen is drawn off from the cathode half-cell. The method is characterised in that the excess gas containing oxygen that is drawn off from the cathode half-cell is subjected to a catalytic oxidation of hydrogen.
