Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE: An automatic gain controller is provided to perform automatically a digitally automatic gain control process without using a multiplier and a divider. CONSTITUTION: An amplifier(30A) is used for generating an output signal by multiplying an input discrete signal by a gain of a gain adaptation portion(30C). A mean absolute value calculation portion(30B) filters the output signal by using a filtering coefficient and thereby obtains an update value of a mean absolute value. A new gain value is calculated from a calculated mean absolute value of the mean absolute value calculation portion(30B) and a requested mean absolute value. The mean absolute value calculation portion(30B) is formed with an absolute value calculator(31), a subtracter(32), a shifter(33), an adder(34), and a delayer(35). The gain adaptation portion(30C) is formed with a code bit addition portion(36), a code bit addition portion(37), a complement calculator(38), a shifter(39), an adder(40), and a delayer(41).
