Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE: An apparatus for illuminating the eye to obtain an image of the iris is provided which is useful for verifying the identity of users of automated teller machines. CONSTITUTION: At least one wide field of view camera (3) and with an associated illuminator (6,10) obtains sufficient images of a person to be identified so that x, y, z coordinates can be established for the expected position of that person's eye. The coordinates are used to direct a narrow field of view camera (16) and associated illuminators (21,22,23) to take an image of the eye that can be used for to identifying the person using iris verification and recognition algorithms. These illuminators are positioned and illuminated to eliminate or minimize specularities and reflections that obscure the iris.
