COATINGS CONTAINING FLUORINATED ESTERS

PURPOSE: Coating compositions containing an alkyd, urethane or unsaturated polyester resin and an ester of an unsaturated alcohol and fluorinated acid wherein the cured coating has an advancing hexadecane contact angle of at least about 40 degrees and improved oil and water repellency is provided. CONSTITUTION: A coating composition comprises: (A) an ester of an unsaturated alcohol and a fluorinated acid of the formula Rf -X-CO-O-R wherein Rf is a C2 -C20 perfluoroalkyl radical or a C5 -C38 perfluoroalkyl radical having at least one ether oxygen atom; R is a C3 to C21 unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, optionally aryl substituted, or a mixture thereof; X is -(CH2)m-, -C6 H4-, -CON(R1)R2-, -SO2 N(R1)R2-, -(CH2)s SOy(CH2)t-, -(CH2)sSOy-CH(CH3)CH2- or -(CH2)sSOy-CH2-CH(CH3)- wherein m is 2 to about 20; s is 1 to about 12; t is 1 to about 17; y is 0, 1 or 2; R1 is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to about 12 carbon atoms; and R2 is alkylene having 1 to about 12 carbon atoms: and (B) alkyd, urethane or unsaturated polyester resin; wherein a cured coating resulting from the coating composition has an advancing hexadecane contact angle of at least about 40 degrees.
