Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To obtain manganese sand with a high deposition rate of manganese by using an alkali to convert a bivalent manganate into manganese hydroxide, depositing the hydroxide on a supporting material and then oxidizing the hydroxide. CONSTITUTION:The supporting material capable of holding manganese oxide is mixed with bivalent manganate; the hydroxide of an alkali metal is allowed to react with the mixture; and a filter medium for contact filtration is obtained. Silica, sand, etc., are used as the supporting material. The alkali metal hydroxide must contain >=62% hydroxyl group (OH) based on the amt. of manganese (Mn) to smoothly carry out oxidation. A mixture of an alkali metal oxide and an oxidizing agent can be added to promote oxidation. The filter medium thus obtained is preferably dried to fix maganese dioxide more strongly to the supporting material.
