PRODUCTION OF FIBER REINFORCED METAL

PURPOSE:To manufacture a fiber reinforced metal excellent in strength, stiffness, wear resistance, etc., by forming a fiber formed body for reinforcement integrally with a removable forming die and removing the removable forming die by solidifying a molten metal by infiltering it to the fiber formed body. CONSTITUTION:The reinforcing fiber prepared body 6 consisting of a polycrystalline alumina fiber, colloidal silica and water is filled up in the space part of the collapsible removable forming die 4 consisting of a plaster and stainless steel made outer die 5. Then after pressing it by a stainless steel made upper die 7, the outer die 5 and upper die 7 are dried by removing them to form an integral body of a reinforcing fiber formed body 8 and removable forming die 4. The integral body is then arranged on the lower die 11 of a squeeze casting die having the lower die 11 and outer die 12, the molten metal 13 composed of an Al alloy is fed to the space part, pressurized by a punch 14 and solidified by infiltering it into the fiber formed body 8. After solidification the lower die 11 and outer die 12 are taken off, the forming die 4 is removed by a shot blast and a fiber reinforced metal is obtd. The generation of the inconveniences of unfiberreinforced metal layer, cold shut, etc., is thus prevented.
