PURPOSE:To extend the exchange life of electrodes in a single pole filter press type ion exchange membrane electrolytic device by preventing cathode materials from contacting with anode vapor and liq. and brine or anode materials from contacting with cathode vapor and liq. and dilute aq. caustic soda soln. CONSTITUTION:The inside wall surfaces of a communicating hole 22 for the anode vapor and liq. and a communicating hole 23 for supplying the dilute caustic soda which are formed to a picture frame-shaped frame constituting anode bodies 7, 9 as well as the inside wall surfaces of a communicating hole 21 for the anode vapor and liq. and a communicating hole 24 for supplying the brine which are formed to the picture frame-shaped frame constituting cathode bodies 1, 3 are so formed as to be covered and protected by sleeve- shaped extension parts 2a, 2b, 8a, 8b provided to the peripheral parts of the communicating holes facing either of the gaskets 2, 8 adjacent respectively to the electrode parts.
