Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer having extremely low chlorine content in reacting a phenol with epichlorohydrin in the presence of an alkali metallic hydroxide, by carrying out the reaction while recovering excess epichlorohydrin from a specific point of time. CONSTITUTION:A phenol is reacted with epichlorohydrin in the presence of an alkali metallic hydroxide while recovering excess epichlorohydrin at a point of time when 50-80wt.% total amount of the alkali metallic hydroxide is added to the reaction system to give the aimed polymer. The reaction is preferably carried out in the coexistence of methyl ethyl ketone at 50-70 deg.C. Excess epichlorohydrin is preferably recovered under reduced pressure at low temperature.
