Zusammenfassung:	NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [Y is S or O; R is H or lower alkyl; R is R, alkoxy, halogen or CF3; R is H or (substituted) lower alkyl; R is H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, alkylthio(substituted)phenyl, etc.; excluding the case that R=R =R =R =H and Y=O] and its acid addition salt. EXAMPLE:N-[ ( 2-phenylquinolin-4-yl )thioxomethyl ]-N-methylglycine beta-hydroxy ethyl ester. USE:A drug. A preventive and remedy for complications of diabetes, e.g. nervous disorder, nephropathy, retinopathy, cataract, etc. It has low toxicity, suppresses galactitol accumulation and exhibits excellent aldose reductase inhibiting action. PREPARATION:A compound of formula I wherein Y=O and R =R can be produced by reacting a compound of formula III (including novel compound) or its reactive derivative with a compound of formula IV [R is (substituted) alkyl] in the presence of a condensation agent.
