Zusammenfassung:NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R1 is 1-18C alkyl or alkoxy; R* is optically active alkyl). EXAMPLE:5-(p-Octyloxyphenyl)pyrazine-2-carboxylic acid 4'-methylhexyl ester. USE:A component of a liquid crystal composition. It is a liquid crystal compound useful as a ferroelectric chiral smectic liquid crystal or liquid crystal composition having excellent threshold characteristics to electric field response. It can be used as a ferroelectric liquid crystal element material for a high-resolution large-sized display element or a TN-type liquid crystal element having improved threshold characteristics. PREPARATION:The objective compound of formula I can be produced by hydrolyzing the 2,3-dicyanopyrazine derivative of formula II with NaOH, etc., decarbonating the hydrolyzed product, halogenating the resultant 2-carboxypyrazine derivative of formula III with SOCl2, etc., to obtain an acid halide and esterifying the halide with an optically active compound of formula HO-R*.
