PURPOSE:To treat at high temperature a carbonyl compound prepared as a by- product in the production of an unsaturated hydrocarbon by oxidative dehydrogenation, by using a catalyst comprising an element such as Fe, Co, Ni, etc., an element such as an alkaline (earth) metal, etc. and at least one of lead and tin, and to remove the compound. CONSTITUTION:In preparing a monoolefin or conjugated diolefin by subjecting a hydrocarbon compound to oxidative dehydrogenation reaction, a reaction product gas is treated at high temperature in the presence of a catalyst comprising at least one element selected from Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Cu, La, and Ce, at least one element selected from alkali metals and alkaline earth metals, and at least one element selected from lead and tin, to remove a carbonyl compound as a by-product. EFFECT:The consumption of hydrocarbons as active ingredients is small, and treatment of waste water is easy.
