Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To readily obtain a compound useful as an intermediate for cyan coupler components in color photography in high purity and yield, by nitrating a 4,6-dichloro-5-alkylphenol and reducing the resultant product. CONSTITUTION:A 4,6-dichloro-5-alkylphenol is nitrated with a mixed acid (e.g. sulfuric acid and nitric acid or a nitrate in place of the nitric acid) at -10-+50 deg.C, preferably 0-30 deg.C to provide a nitrated substance expressed by the formula (R is
