Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To obtain an electrochromic display element having extremely superior response characteristics with respect to coloring and decoloring by forming a counter electrode substance layer contg. a metallocene polymer as the counter electrode substance. CONSTITUTION:A counter electrode substance layer contg. a metallocene polymer as the counter electrode substance is formed. The metallocene polymer used is obtd. by bonding metallocene, that is, a biscyclopentadienyl complex salt [(C5H5)2M] as a side chain to the principal chain of a polymer. The complex salt consists of two cyclopentadiene rings and a transition metal. A typical example of the metallocene polymer is polyvinylferrocene having ferrocene [(C5H5)2Fe] as metallocene and represented by formula 1. Thus, the response characteristics of the resulting electrochromic display element with respect to coloring and decoloring are improved.
