Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To improve the starting performance in a severe cold season by applying a current to a part of heaters when an engine is started, and to the remaining heaters after the engine is started, in a multicylinder diesel engine in which an electric heater to heat the intake air is furnished at every independent passage to each cylinder. CONSTITUTION:Electric heaters H1 to H4 to preheat the intake air are furnished at independent intake air passages 4 which are connected to the combustion chambers of the first to fourth cylinders respectively through intake ports 3. The air heaters H1, H2, and H3, H4 are connected to a battery 46 through lead wires 45 and 47 which furnish switches 48 and 49 respectively. And when the engine is started, if the temperature of the intake air detected by an intake air temperature sensor 52 is less than a specific value (about -15 deg.C), the e.m.f. of the battery 46 is decreased. In this case, only the switch 48 is ON by a control circuit 13 to apply a current only to the heaters H1 and H2 to preheat the intake air sufficiently. And after the engine is started perfectly, the switch 49 is ON to apply the current also to the air heaters H3 and H4, to heat the intake air.
