The lump coals 1 are ignited by being heated by the heat generator 5 with the air supplied by the powdered coal burner 2. Then, the flame of the lump coals 1 is propagated to the main fuel of powdered coal supplied from the burner 2 to start the burning of the main fuel. A ceramics igniter or heater is used as the heat generator, and its temperature is acceptable if it helps the spontaneous burning of coal. Since the coal used for ignition is the lump coal, it does not fly around inside the furnace and is not released out of the furnace. Further, there is no need to use a large amount of oil or gas for ignition.
