Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To obtain a carbon fiber in high efficiency, preventing the intrusion of outer atmosphere into a furnace, by suspending plural fiber tows on a bar having uneven horizontal cross-section in a state of reed screen and transferring the tows through the upper part in a tunnel furnace, thereby subjecting the tows to treatments such as flame-resistant, infusibilization, carbonization, graphitization, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective carbon fiber can be produced by suspending plural fiber tows 1, 1' in the state of reed screen on a bar having an uneven or zigzag circumferential shape of horizontal cross-section and moving through the upper part in a tunnel furnace from the inlet end 4 toward the outlet end 16 by a conveyor 6 and subjecting the fiber tow to at least one treatment selected from flame-resistance, infusibilization, carbonization and graphitization. The tunnel furnace is preferably composed of a fiber tow-introducing part consisting of an inclined cylinder 7, a horizontal straight cylinder part 11 and an outlet part 14.
