Zusammenfassung:NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R1 is 1-18C alkyl or alkoxy; R* is optically active alkyl). EXAMPLE:5-(p-heptyloxyphenyl)pyrazine-2-carboxylic acid (p-2-methylbutyl oxycarbonyl)phenyl ester. USE:Useful as a ferroelectric chiral smectic liquid crystal or liquid crystal composition having excellent threshold characteristics to electric field response. It is effective in preventing cross talk and giving high contrast when used in a display driven by simple matrix electrode and is especially suitable for a high-precision large-sized display element. The threshold characteristics of a TN-type liquid crystal element can be improved by using the compound as a mixture with a nematic liquid crystal. PREPARATION:The objective compound of formula I can be produced by hydrolyzing and decarbonating the compound of formula II, converting the product to an acid halide and reacting the acid halide with the compound of formula III.
