Zusammenfassung:PURPOSE:To provide the titled element which has a long repetitive operation life of coloration and decoloration and excellent responsiveness and permits the use of a solid or semi-solid electrolyte by using a material which generates cations when irradiated with light as a material constituting a photo decomposition layer. CONSTITUTION:A transparent conductive film 3 is formed on an electrode substrate 2 consisting of a plastic plate and a coloring layer 4 having 10-20mum thickness is formed on the film 3. The coloring layer is formed by mixing 100pts.wt. epicoat 828 and 20pts.wt. paraxylene diamine, then forming the layer by a roll coating method. The photodecomposition layer 5 is then formed by adding 4pts.wt. photodecomposable salt to an acrylic resin contg. 10pts.wt. PP carbonate, uniformly kneading the mixture, then uniformly coating the mixture on the layer 4 to about 10mum thickness. A transparent conductive film 6 and an electrode substrate 7 are then successively formed on the layer 5, by which the display element is obtd.
