Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To use a specified oxonol dye as a photographic dye having superior stability on standing in an aqueous soln. and free from residual coloring after development. CONSTITUTION:An oxonol dye represented by general formula I (where R1 is alkyl or aryl; n is 1 or 2; m is 0, 1 or 2; and M is a cation), e.g., the compound of formula II is used as a light absorbing dye for a silver halide photographic material. When the photographic emulsion layer is colored, the above-mentioned dye is preferably added in a concn. of about 1-3%.
