Zusammenfassung:	PURPOSE:To provide a highly water-absorbing material which has a high absorbency of pure water and physiological saline, consisting of a product obtd. by saponifying a mixture of an acrylonitrile copolymer and a hydroxyl group-contg. compd. with an alkali. CONSTITUTION:Acrylonitrile and not more than 20mol% of a monomer of the formula (wherein X is H or methyl; Y is phenyl, acetoxyl or 1-18C alkylcarbonyl when X is H; Y is acetoxyl or 1-18C alkylcarbonyl when X is methyl) are copolymerized to obtain an acrylonitrile copolymer (A). Component A is mixed with at least one compd. (B) contg. a hydroxyl group selected from among 3-6C monosaccharides, sugars, sugar alcohols, 5-18C aliph. alcohols and alicyclic alcohols in a weight ratio of A/B of 0.2 or above. The mixture is saponified in an aq. soln. of 0.5-7.5N alkali at 85-200 deg.C for 1-3hr, neutralized and dried.
